EV charging cost calculator

Calculate home EV charging costs from battery size, charge percentage, electricity price and charging losses.

EV charging cost

Estimate a charge using your own tariff.

Estimated charge cost

Formula: battery × (end − start) ÷ 100 ÷ (1 − loss ÷ 100) × price

How to use this calculator

Enter the usable battery capacity from your vehicle documentation, the starting and target battery percentages, and your electricity price per kWh. The calculator estimates energy drawn from the supply, the cost of one charge and a monthly total. All initial values are examples, not current tariffs or recommendations.

Worked example

A 64 kWh battery charged from 20% to 80% gains 38.4 kWh. If 10% of the supplied energy is lost, the supply must deliver 38.4 ÷ 0.90 = 42.67 kWh. At €0.25/kWh, that charge costs approximately €10.67. Four equivalent charges cost €42.67; totals are calculated before rounding.

Why divide by efficiency?

Here, a 10% loss means 90% of energy drawn from the supply reaches the battery. Dividing by 0.90 accounts for that definition. Actual losses vary with the car, temperature and charging equipment.

Does this include public charging fees?

No. Add any session, parking, subscription or time-based fees separately. For a public charger, use its actual billing terms; this estimate assumes payment per kWh drawn from the supply.
